Assignment 5- postcard

For assignment 5, we were asked to produce a postcard with the theme "Colourful Asia".

I have always loved the Asian performing arts very much. They are really colourful and heartening. Sadly, these cultural arts heritage of the Asian are gradually being forgotten and discarded by people around the globe, especially the younger generation. Hence, my postcard aims to recapture these Asian performing arts such as the “Chinese opera”, “Malay Wayang” and “Japanese Geisha” in a more youthful light. And most importantly, to capture the colourful essence of Asia. Hence, I would design the postcard in such a way that it represents the Singapore heritage board which aims to promote the Asian cultures.

The illustrations are drawn in a cartoon style (with big head and small body) to make it look cuter and appeal to the mass public, especially the youth.

1st Prototype

I have started with the colour palette with the two normal and most frequently combinations of colours the warm and cool colours.

While perceptions of colour are somewhat subjective, there are some colour effects that have universal meaning. Colours in the red area of the colour spectrum are known as warm colours and include red, orange, and yellow. These warm colours evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.

Here, I am trying to evoke the feeling of warmth and energy in the postcard.

Colours on the blue side of the spectrum are known as cool colours and include blue, purple, and green. These colours are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indifference.

Here, I am trying to evoke the feeling of calm and coolness in the postcard.

The black rounded edge border around the postcard is intentional because I feel the black is able to bring out the colours and illustrations better as compared to no borders at all.

Final Prototype

Lesson learnt

I have learnt that colours and different colour combination can really create different emotions.

Assignment 4 - Poster Design

Conceptualizing

For our fourth assignment, we were supposed to design a poster with the objective of informing people about the theme “save, kill or prevent”. I have chosen the theme “save”, “save” the notion of beauty.

Comments

-imbalance size of NUS logo

-the copy is too small

-too little breathing space from the heading

Final Prototype

The red bonding box, ”SAVE” and “STOP” and the large gory illustration are added in to capture the attention of the passer-bys and bring across the message that slim is not necessarily beauty.

I have placed the heading on the right side of the poster to balance the illustration on the left.

Contrast

•         Try to maintain a good contrast between the background and the foreground by using the red bonding box

•         Balance

•          Try to maintain good Asymmetrical balance on the left side of the poster by indicating visual weights between the illustration and the information on the right.

•         Continuity

•          The illustration leads to the caption starting from the left to right. Directing the attention of the viewers to the caption and copy.

•         Information

 •          Copy was restricted to the right side of the poster which doesn’t confuse the viewer, unlike in poster with words randomly placed.

•         Typography

•          Thick and rich typeface for heading adds a attract the attention of the passer-bys.

Lesson learnt

From this assignment, I learnt more about the placement of items in a poster to keep the balance and harmony of the overall poster.

Assignment 3

Title: U C what I C (Visual story)

• Visual narrative: Telling a story in 8 photos

(without using words to describe your story)

• Story telling: Your story can be with or without

a twist

Our third assignment was to tell a story using 8 or less pictures with or without a surprise ending/twist in the plot. It seemed like an easy task. But perhaps …

No!

I thought of many ideas, but they were going to be hard to execute because I would require certain types of models for the pictures, whom I won't be able to get. For instance, I wanted to have a story that involved a toddler, but realised that I didn't know anyone in that age group.

Comment

-Story can be more challenging

I have decided to keep to this story as it is really clear out and simple. It can be easily understood.

Lesson learnt

This assignment really taught me about camera angles and settings. It's the first time I faced and realized the problem of noise in photographs. Apparently, ISO settings can be altered to reduce noise. I have also realised that different angles can really present things differently, and create a different mood/effect. I also better understood the rule of third in taking pictures.
